Spring 2014 Season in Women's Golf

Women's Golf

One of the sports offered here at EMCC is Women's Golf. The sport has been offered for more than four years. Stefan Almanza has been the head coach of the Mountain Lions Women’s Golf Team since spring 2013.

The golf season lasts from February to April. Almanza has had high hopes for the program and was interviewed during the 2014 season, "From a competitive standpoint this season, one member is ranked 3rd in her division and plays in every tournament. We have two great women on our team but we are looking to add two more to the roster."

The Mountain Lions did fall short of their roster goals by April, but it did not deter their performance or team values. Almanza stated, "On our team we value sportsmanship and having great attitude. I would rather have someone with 'so-so' game and good attitude versus an individual with a good game and a bad attitude."

The team does its fair share of traveling as the women compete in tournaments throughout the season. As mentioned earlier, the team is looking to get more women golfers involved. Any student who is enrolled full-time at EMCC is eligible to play. This means that you can also take course at another Maricopa Community College and still be eligible, as long as you are enrolled in at least twelve credits here.

"Women's golf is growing tremendously. With good recruiting in the west valley and with some of the great players we already have, we plan to bring back a national championship," said Almanza.

The Women's Golf team at EMCC has created a very close-knit group centered on teamwork and family. The women love being a part of the team and enjoy representing EMCC in competition.

Anyone looking to get involved should contact Stefan Almanza via email at, or stop by the Student Union and pick up an Athletic Form that can be filled out and left for Herschel Jackson, Director of Athletics.
