Beating the heat is something much appreciated here in Arizona. I know I am always trying to find some entertainment that will keep me indoors without me feeling like a lazy bum for lying in the house all day.
Luckily for us, recently we have witnessed more live entertainment opportunities. While concerts get most of the attention, I think stand-up comedy is underrated. Standup involves comedians telling stories about their lives, and the world around them. Some shows may even involve other elements as well, such as props or music.
In 2015, there will be over twenty different stand-up comedians coming to the Arizona. Some are veterans like Gabriel Iglesias, Jerry Seinfield, George Lopez and Kathy Griffin, but others are not as well known, like Carly Aquilino and Anjelah Johnson.
Gabriel Iglesias is known in the comic world as Fluffy. Iglesias is one of America’s most successful standup comedians. His standup comedy is a mixture of storytelling, parodies, characters and sound effects that bring his personal experiences to life. He will be performing at the U.S. Airways Center on Saturday, February 14th.
Jerry Seinfield is known for specializing in observational humor often focusing on personal relationships and uncomfortable social obligations. In 2005, Comedy Central named him the 12th greatest stand-up comedian of all time. He will be performing at Comerica Theatre on Saturday, March 6th.
George Lopez tends to talk about race and ethnic relations, including Mexican American culture in his stand up shows. He will be performing at Celebrity Theatre on Saturday, July 18th.
Kathy Griffin established her career with candid observations about everyday life and her dating experiences, later she began to focus more on mocking celebrities. Now, her act consists of recounting embellished stories involving celebrities. Griffin also likes to poke fun at herself and her “D-list” status. She will be performing at Ovations Live! At Wild Horse Pass on Friday, March 20th and Saturday, March 21st. Also performing at this venue is Jenny McCarthy on March 14th.
Carly Aquilino is best known for being the hilarious New Yorker with bright red hair on MTV’s Girl Code. At only 24 years old, Aquilino is making a name for herself. She has a bright future ahead of herself. She will be performing at StandUpLive on Friday, February 13th, and on Saturday, February 14th. Make sure to check out the calendar on StandUpLive.com because they have many stand-up comedians performing throughout the year like, Al Madrigal, Lil Duval, and Cristela Alonzo.
Anjelah Johnson is most commonly recognized for her characters: a Vietnamese nail salon employee and rude fast food employee (named Bon Qui Qui). She will be performing at Desert Diamond Casino in Tucson on Saturday, March 7th.
I for one have never been to a stand-up show in person but I watch many on television and Netflix. After seeing all the performers who will be here I plan on going to a few. Tickets are very affordable and it’s a great excuse to get out of the house, have a fun night, and laugh until you cry.
